I love Fremantle, the place I have called home for 33 years. Fremantle is unique. It has the oldest public building in WA, in the old Roundhouse jail, a working port, a fishing harbour, and four beaches. One of them in the inner city, at the end of historic High Street. Where else in a small city does one find so many community centres? We have the heritage and entertainment inner city, historic North Fremantle, South Fremantle, Hilton and Samson. Fremantle has one of the most engaged communities in Australia. We care and we are feisty. We express our support as loudly as we express our concerns and disagreements, because we want to make our gorgeous little city even better for future generations. In Fremantle we are proud of our history, but also extremely aware what colonisation means to our First Nations People, so we listen to them and act accordingly. Fremantle is the place of art, of tourism, of music, of literature and of strong political opinions, but also the place with a huge heart, where people will go out of their way to help those in need. Freo is growing, albeit too slowly. Many people do not like change, but change is inevitable and good, because without progress our stagnating city will slowly die. I have lived in several cities and in three countries, but Fremantle is the one and only place I have ever felt totally at home. The Freo community is my family. It is the place where my life will end in the not too distant future. I am so grateful that I found this place, that is my home, my heart, and my soul.
